Farewell Brittania Simon Young
#1
An interesting work continuing the tradition of Lindsay Allason Jones's Roman woman with good history being fictionalised. Here it is various episodes in the history of Roman Britain from pre conquest to the end told by a descendant of Togidubnus whose family is used to link the various stories.
From the re-enactors point of view it sets out a subjective view for example of the alarm of Senator finding he was to entertain a tatooed barbarian with heads on his saddle or the reality of a Governors visit to Claudia Severa on the Wall embarrasssed by a naked blue welcoming party and sexually humiliated by the Governor himself.
Is also has a lot of detail such as the slave with chalked feet showing he was from outside the province and the slave girl with the purchase receipt around her neck.
If anyone is visiting the amphitheatre at Silchester they should first read the account of the martyrdom of a Christian woman there and then visit in the dusk as I did last time.
Its published in paperback by Phoenix cost £8.99
