David Simm makes a pretty mean falx, if the results of the cutting tests he did with it in Vol 11 of JRMES was anything to go by!

Didn't Legio XX have a Dacian? Sure I saw a picture of him carving up a shield somewhere.

Tricky to use 'safely' in a reenactment situation though...bit like having a DaneAxe...great weapon for tarting with but they just won't let you use it properly on the field.

There are some Romanians that reenact the Dacians..

See www.dacia.org and have a look at some of the Dacia Magazines. April 2008 is a good issue!

Falx are available from Mark Morrow.

Well, I wouldn't say Legio XX "has" a Dacian, but Steve Peffley comes to play with us whenever he can. And yes, he has a falx!

Made by Mark Morrow. I'm the one holding the other end of the beam that the test shield is resting on. It was exciting! It's also why we carry pila.

Great pic Matthew...a falx is a pretty nasty weapon to be facing,it makes that shield look like paper.

PS the romans had cameras??my god we owe them so much Big Grin D
Out of sight of subject shores, we kept even our eyes free from the defilement of tyranny. We, the most distant dwellers upon earth, the last of the free, have been shielded till today by our very remoteness and by the obscurity in which it has shrouded our name.

Hmm, I wonder how long it took him to get his falx free of the scutum. Big Grin

No doubt about it, Mark Morrow makes a heck of a blade, be it gladius, pugio, or falx. Big Grin

A lot longer than it took the mates of the miles whose scutum was struck to cut him up with their gladii... [/list]

Actually, it took him long enough to ram a gladius in his guts...A straight cut into the scutum would probably cause the blade to be lodged there...Not a good idea.

Try to contact Catalin Boranjic. You can find his contact details at the Encyclopedia Dacica site http://www.enciclopedia-dacica.ro/ Or contact me off list and I'll put you in touch with him.

He has made a lot of replica falxes and other weapons for the Dacian festival in Cricau. I know that the first falx he made was by hand from a bar of iron, but I'm not sure about the others that he makes for the festival. He's also published a few articles specifically about the falx.
