achaemenid empire
#1
hi

I admit: following question does not concern allies & enemies of Rome but I did not know where else to put it.

I'm reading a study about the achaemenid army. There were two things I did not know and could not find when searching for it on the net.

Does anybody what a falchion and taka are?

I'd assume that 'Falchion' in this context is referring to a single edged heavy curved sword (wrong word I'd say as it wouldn't have been like a medieval idea of falchion at all). More like a scimitar I'd have thought?

The taka was the crescent shaped shield.

Yes, and the falchion should more properly be described as a machaira, or a kopis, a heavy slashing sword, that, yes, filled exactly the same role as the Medieval falchion.
