I recently bought and read:
Ralf Scharf: Der Dux Mogontiacensis und die Notitia Dignitatum. de Gruyter, Berlin 2005, ISBN 311018835X
Scharf presents a very scholarly (and unfortunately, written in very technical German) of the Western sections of the Notitia Dignitatum. In discussing the command of the Duke of the Middle Rhine front, he also discusses the events in history, the sources and above all, the Notitia Dignitatum. There's much in that discussion, which also touches heavily upon Britain, which has made me think about my current assumptions.
Has anyone read this book as well?
