The chain is why I imagined it as being a strong box, to disuade anyone
walking off quietly with the cash...?

Certainly possible, the chain could have been attached to a weight, or to the inside of a larger chest or desk. Do we have any greater context on where the original(s) were found?

It has all the characteristics of boxes with a sliding lid, be they made in wood, metal or bone/ivory. See the grooves on the inside of the side and back panels, where the lid slides in and the lower edge of the front, the missing upper part of which is part of the lid (compare with the Comacchio repro above). Drawers with sliding lids seem unlikely to me.

For the larger box from Aalen - I never researched this I'm afraid.
