Maybe check Aristophanes? I also remember reading about the Scythian archers rounding up citizens for the assembly. Supposedly, anyone who tried to evade could be forced to pay a fine. Thucydides mentions some archers in the Athenian army at the start of the Peloponnesian War.

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.
