A good Sutton Hoo helmet replica?
#1
Howdy rangers!

I have always"drooled over" a good replica of the famous Sutton Hoo helmet. I think this is the best version commercially available right now (Payl Chen / Hanwei):

What do you think?

Wow, Paul Chen came up with that? I'm impressed! Might find all kinds of little flaws if I compared it closely to a couple custom repros I've seen, but heck, for 600 Euros I'd say it's a steal!

Always loved that helmet. But I only have one of the paper ones!

Have to admit I have eyed it a few times myself.
I can't help wonder if the detail will be the same as his Obergammerau
pugio though! :?

The Hanwei/Chen version:

I think it's very cool, apart from the eyebrows should be brass. But then gilding could cover that nicely

If I were to do anything other than Roman seriously, it'd probably be Anglo-Saxon.

Looks like the reconstructions are all a lot wider in the bowl compared to the original.

Well, possibly. But the original is just scattered fragments. The "official" reconstruction, with the brown background, is rather different in outline than the first attempt from many years before. It's kind of subjective.

Hi Jyrki,

I think you get a lot of value for that amount of money. Here is a link with pictures of someone wearing the paul chen helm. [url:2mw2zy9o]http://therionarms.com/reenact/therionarms_c599.html[/url]. So you can see how the helm would look on you.

Waaah!,i want it,I WANT IT!(and a voice in the background says i know, but you can't have it,so shut up, Cry ),seriously, and diverging slightly, just when was the original manufactured?,i've heard that Angela Evans dated it to around 500C.E a few years ago but has that been revised since then?,i'd love to know if that is the case.

Does it come with that lining, or did you do it youself Bjorn?
I see from your pictures that the detail work is really great!
I would go for it myself Virilis!

I wish I would, then I could line my own Sutton Hoo helm  . The pictures in my post are from an internetshop I came across looking for Sutton Hoo replica metalwork.

@ iohannes sebald, In the most recent publication the Sutton Hoo Helmet by Sonja Marzinzik the helmet is very roughly and cautiously dated between 500-800 AD because of the Vendel Style decoration and the British Museum dates the helmet early seventh century, because of the coins found in the burial chamber.

Something I just noticed about the original is how the curvature of the cheek pieces seem to make them close flush with the mask.
