Roman Glass what colors did they have?
#1
Hello All,
I have seen some pieces of Roman glass but it all seems to be blue. So my Question is: What colors did they have? As well as what would be the most common colors?

It would be easier to ask what colours didn't they use!

Have you seen some of the intricate millefiori pieces? Some look like they could have been made yesterday. http://www.phoenixancientart.com/millef ... fiori.html

Don't forget to search for beads as well as utilitarian pieces

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

A wide variety of colours, lot's of different techniques.

I haven't time to go into detail right now.

Some colours they had:
-clear
-white
-green
-Blue
-Brown
-Very dark purple or almost black
-red
-...

Pressed in moulds, blown in moulds, free-blown, mosaic glass,...

But others had the time: [url:27bbyxau]http://www.romanglassmakers.co.uk or for German speaking visitors [url:27bbyxau]http://www.glasrepliken.de

In fact, most of the Roman glass is close to colorless, with a blue-green or green-yellow tint. This refers to the 'natural' color of the glass which is caused by iron oxides in the sands used.

But the cobalt-blue glass ist so nice. That´s why it´s so highly collectable ... and seems to turn up everywhere ... 8)

Best wishes,
