stirrup ?
#1
I was reading/looking through the Curle 1911 Newstead documents (pdf) and in chapter XIII
Quote:Tools and Implements
, page 31, i came across the picture attached.
The links for these documents/chapters you can find on this forum.
The numbers 6 and 14 caught my eye.
Number 6 looks very much like an "Avar" stirrup and number 14 has the same features as a late medieval/modern stirrup.

In the text on page 30 number 6 is described as
Quote:Ring with two loops, probably part of the mounting of a small pail.
and number 14 as
Quote:Manacle (?)
.
The original page for these objects is 288.

So my question is:
Being an old excavation report has there been a new dating of these finds.
If the dating is correct then this could help the discussion about the use of stirrups in Roman time.
Looking forward to your answers.

I don't think that I'd be prepared to say stirrups what would be of some help here of course is measurements of these artifacts. Infact 14 does look very much a manicle and as I say measurements would be of great help, indeed there was so much came out of the excavation pits at Trimontium it's even hard to say even yet what many things are.

Thanks Brian for your reply.

I looked it up in the mentioned chapter, no sizes/diameters reported for these objects.
The drawings don't show a scale bar.
Which is not unusual for an old excavation report.

But supposed saddle parts have been excavated.

From Smiths Stock page21 to page 27.
10 and 11 forming parts (cantle and pommel) of the framework of a saddle .Pit XVI page 228.
See attached picture.

Objects 6 and 14 from the previous picture are from Pit XLV or Pit XXII (6), Pit LV and Pit XXII (14).
So to get the answers desired:
Is there someone who has access to the originals in a museum or depot etc, so that they can be measured.
Is there a more recent publication , based on recent research, about these objects.
