That Star Trek episode was a lot of fun.

However this list is missing the recent Planet of the Apes re-make. Yes, the look was not exactly Roman (one critic called it "ancient Rome meets the Tiki Room") but the film's writers / producers went to great length in the pre-release publicity to point out that they had patterned the Ape society after that of Imperial Rome. This point was not lost on critics but audiences may have missed it in all the other nonsense of that film (which is in no way equal to the original, though the make-up was well done).

Leo finds a culture of big, intelligent humanoid apes who speak English, act like humans, and hunt English-speaking humans for slaves. The apes must have learned to “ape” human behavior during their earlier evolution. Their government, army, and culture are similar to ancient Rome.

This 2001 script has little of the earlier film's politically correct bite, and instead fuses the story of American astronaut Leo Davidson (Wahlberg) with something akin to Spartacus or the biblical leader of enslaved peoples, Moses. The script likens the apes' society to that of ancient Rome, with the scheming, warlike General Thade (an all but unrecognizable Tim Roth) as its militaristic fist and David Warner's Senator Sandar as one of its heads of state.

Tales of the Trigan Empire..I looked for that for years when we first moved over here in '74.

I came across an annual in the company house in Brueni when I was a kid.

Never remembered the name of it though, so had little luck. :roll:

..Hi Gaius!,Gods,yes i remember reading the Trigan Empire many years ago in that wonder of print"Look and Learn",as i recall did'nt Trigo have a brother called Brag and a nephew called Janno?,i know his mentor was Peric(usually referred to as"wise old peric"i think)and the green skinned opposition were Lokans,also,was'nt the early artwork by Ronald Embleton?.Two of the stories that stuck in my mind were based on the lost desert legion and,curiously,the man/beast of Glamis Castle!!,i'm sure that someone in Hollywood could have a great time adapting it for the screen(not that this is a hint,of course)but if it works for Tintin,welll...err :wink:

This month, the last two volumes of The Trigan Empire -The Collection will be published. Volume 11 and 12 will come out simultaneously and can be ordered from week 52.

Another Trigan production that already is available is The Art of the Trigan Empire of The Book Palace. It's a beautifull catalogus with artwork made for The Trigan Empire by several artists which is for sale.

An enormous (and decadent) gallactic empire that will fall unavoidably. Even in it´s majestic decadence, a general (Bel Riose) will make it regain some splendour, althrough the emperor finally has fear of him and throws him away. Any coincidence with Belisarius it´s...intentioned.
