Caesar\'s books.
#1
Does anyone know the when Caesar's books were published.

I was under the impression that he released his Gallic Wars stuff ASAP to build up his prestige. I have no proof of that though. . .

When were his Civil War books released? Was he still alive when they were circulating?

Thanks,

Many scholars believe that the Gallic Commentaries were based on field reports sent to the Senate each year. According to Suetonius, these were still in existence when he wrote his life of the Caesars probably under Hadrian. They suggest that the edited version was published in 51 BC as propaganda. Caesar began the Civil War Commentaries to aid in his career but it is suggested that he lost interest after he won. They were unfinished at his death but published anyway. The context and publication of Caesar’s works can be found, among other places, in the introduction to 1997 Oxford University Press edition of the Civil War.
