Salvete Omnes!

Last year I did a bit of travelling. I've put some pictures of the places I visited up on our website.

1) Oiasso Roman Museum, Irun, Pays Basque http://www.romanarmy.ie/Oiasso_2008.htm

2) Basilica of St.John, Selcuk (Ephesus), Turkey http://www.romanarmy.ie/Church_St_John.htm

3) Selcuk Museum, some great gladiatorial stele http://www.romanarmy.ie/Selcuk_Museum.htm

If you want any details on any of the images then just deop me a line. Once again, our policy on the use of any of the pictures on our site is simple, use what ever you want for what ever you want (within reason  ). It would be nice if you were to credit the source...

Lots more of Ephesus etc to follow.

Outstanding, Martin!
Would it be possible to post the gladiatorial images on the Roman Combat Sports forum? There are some reliefs there I've never seen and would like to discuss with the other gladiator buffs. Thanks again.

Salve John

Sure, do what ever you like with the images. I must sound a word of caution though. In many of the images the stele look orange in color, this was just the way my camera captured the images. Most are actually greyish in color like limestone rather than sandstone.

You didn't happen to wander round the town walls, did you, Martin? I'm always on the look-out for someone who has done the circuit.

I know Selçuk has an impressive (Ottoman?) fortress, but I actually meant Ephesus.

Apparently there's a fantastic Hellenistic-era town wall running along the hills above the town. One of the towers is colloquially known as "St Paul's Prison".

Hi Duncan

Unfortunately no, I did not get a chance to walk the walls of Ephesus. I spent a week trying to squeeze in as much as I could but did not visit the walls. To be honest with you, I was not aware that there was a wall to explore until you said it. Only a fraction of Ephesus has been exposed. Much of the surrounding buildings have now been wired off to protect against looters and thieves. Both my son Alexander and myself spent two days in Ephesus. We could have spent two more and still have needed time to explore.

I must caution people though, the official guides are very poor. They are far more conserned with trying to bring you to the local potteries etc than give you an educated visit to the site.

There are two sites associated with Ephesus, the old and new sites and it takes a while to go between both. My main focus for this visit was the museum at Selcuk but now that I've bought a house in Selcuk I hope to explore much of the surrounding area. I notice you say the fortress over the town was actually Ottoman. You may well be right but my guide declared it was built by the Byzantines (I did not have time to visit); mind you he was the same guide that tried to sell me ancient coin, probably made of titanium!

I will be posting much more in the coming days, make of it what you will.

Confusedhock: I hope you will be renting it out to RAT members at preferential rates! Scholars wishing to study the fortifications at Ephesus should, of course, have priority! Big Grin
