Well, here's where I resurect this thread to show you the results of a couple of hours with a saw, a file and a drill. These were made from a strip cut from a shank bone.
The dots were first drilled and then filled with a mixture of beeswax and crushed charcoal (lampblack is a bit tricky to find in these days of electricity). I may try ring and dot on my next set. Sorry the photo is a little blurry.

I use a candle and a plate to produce my own lampblack.
Just hold the bottom of the plate
in the flame, slowly moving the plate around.
Black soot will deposit on the bottom of the plate 8)
