What\'s the difference between a praefect and a praetor?
#1
There are some questions that I wanted to ask you, besides the one that appears as the topic title:
- Since when were there praefects and praetors?
- Were praefects governors nominated by the Emperor while praetors and proconsuls were elected by the Senate and People?
- What were the types of praefects?
- And whatever you want to put to trial...

A praetor is an official office with imperium: the praetor -always a senator- was allowed to command armies, but at some stage became responsible for the administration of right (more...). A praefectus is usually a military commander, without imperium. Praefecti could be used anywhere (more...).

During the Empire, you wouldn't meet praetores in the army, but many praefecti.
