Somethings not quite right about this one..
#1
Yes, its sort of reenacting related, but I think this is the best place to put this....

Now I will admit that my knowledge of ancient Roman armor and helmets isnt nearly as good as everyone elses, but when I saw this little gem on ebay I wasnt sure weather to laugh or cry.

Theres just something off about it... but I cant say what (note dripping sarcasm). But it was a real steal at $105 with shipping. :roll:

You know, I think it would be just perfect with this costume... I think ill pick up both to wear to my next event

Your right there is something about that helmet I just can't figure out what it is, its right on the tip of my tongue :wink:

(Gasps with joy) The romans wore houseshoes into battle?! Yipee! Will save me so much money on my impression I can by the costume and a short sword and that will be my cataphract impression (Think of the time I'll save)

isn't that a cheap imitation of the infamous Deepeka "trooper helmet"? I have seen this thing also at some museums at hadrians wall.

It was Museum Replicas Ltd/Windlass Steelcrafts that pioneered the "trooper" helmet. Let's give credit where it's due! Every other manufacturer on earth simply has their own version. Deepeeka continues to make theirs because it's their hottest selling item. Most versions include a bit of the "melt-down syndrome", i.e., a little worse than whatever version they copied it from, in this case including the rather avant-garde cheekpiece configuration... Interesting that the crest is described as "brown".

Hey, this helmet is still better than anything in "Gladiator" or HBO's "Rome", so what the heck?

I feel downright terrible for anyone who purchases one of these, I am thinking of picking up a Roman Gallic style helmet just as a collectors item. I will be consulting my Osprey "The Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan by Michael Simkins" & my bigger Osprey collectors edition book as well as here before I make any such purchase.

That all being said, that helmet looks downright silly I cannot imagine it fools anyone not even a novice to the subject.

Our group has one of those, we bought it for around $80 a few years ago. We use our for life steel target practice and waepons tests.

......Ahmmmm, ------ at this time of the year a lot of my fellow countrymen/-women do celebrate what they call "Carnival" or "Fastnacht" --- .... you sure that these "thingies" are not out of a costumes catalogue for this occasion ?! Or maybe this is an exact (and genuine ?!) replica of a roman soldiers "Saturnalia Outfit" ?? :roll:

If that would be the case, it's rather "Helau & Alaaf"* than "Avete", don't you think ?? 8)

Greez

Simplex

* Helau = Carnival Parole in Mainz/"Määänz" (Mogontiacum)/ "Alaaf"= Carnival Parole at Köln/"Kölle"/Colonia

In all, it's rather late for the Carival Season right now, methinks. :wink:
