Germanic Trousers and Belt before AD
#1
Hello, I am new to this forum so hello all ancient enemies.

I am looking for info on trousers and belts (with buckles) for the Germanic peoples in the BC Iron age period. I am aware of the knee length pants from Marx Etzel, as well as depictions on the Gundestrup cauldron. Are there any evidence for longer trousers? I'm sure they had them, isn't it pretty cold in Germany?
I am also aware of some leg wraps from the netherlands.

As for belts and buckles I have no info other than what is on the gundestrup cauldron. They appear wide belts, with obviouse decoration, but we see no buckle. Can any body help me with some info and pictures.

Oh, I also have an image of a bone belt hook from Gremany, 500BC, in the shape of a bird. Any idea what this may have been used for?

many thanks

As far as belt buckles go, there are the Batavian style buckles. www.angelfire.com/me/ik/images/gordel.jpg is a drawing of one. I believe you can buy a reproduction of one from Armamentia.

Tollund man had a belt similar to the toggle belt instructions on the Vicus site. He was found in a Danish bog and is estimated to be a little older than 2000 years. He was naked except for his belt, his cap, and a noose around his neck. It is believed that he was a sacrifice to one of the ancient German dieties.

Hmm.... Oh well. Here's the link to the reproduction that Armamentia sells. A little pricy, but an awesome peice! http://www.armamentaria.com/store/index ... cts_id=312 If you want more info on the Batavians, Adrian Wink is the man to contact. On RAT here, he is known as Peroni. Good luck!

Awesome, any ideas how this may have looked on the belt? would the little "bilb" on the end pass through the end of the belt with holes? Any other metal parts on the belt?

Peroni posted a thread showing off his interpretation of how the belt would have been reconstructed. I personally don't favor the bronze belt, but have been planning on making a leather version with this buckle once I can find some more information. I recently ordered a book called Ethnic Identity and Imperial Power: The Batavians in the Early Roman Empire. It has all kinds of details of the artifacts found at Kessel-Lith, the largest collection of early Batavian military artifacts. Oh, here is Peroni's thread: <!-- l <a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=24691&hilit=+batavian">viewtopic.php?f=20&t=24691&hilit=+batavian<!-- l
