Illerup
#1
Does anybody know of some good english sites concerning the finds at Illerup. A good site here http://www.illerup.dk/deepweb.php?top=26&language=0 but I cant read a thing.

What style of Roman swords where these, Spathas?

I am also wondering how people go about getting thier information when attempting to make an historical re-construction of a culture. Presently I would like to make two, a Germanic warrior Gallic War period, the second of the Illerup finds however this is an area I do not know much about.

Some help would be good.

I believe that the Illerup stuff is all post Gallic wars ... 250AD onwards.

There is a two volume book which has good drawings of all the finds. Try Amazon with Illerup .. bit pricey though.

I haven't found much on the web.

Thanks, just did a book search and found 12 Volum set, each book costing approx $200 a piece!
Curiously does anybody know of any groups that are doing Illerup?

That is a fantastic book but it deals with the whole Barbaricum and doesn't have a huge amount specific to Illerup Adal.

Ron, "Illerup Adal - Archaeology as a Magic Mirror " is the best (and only) good introduction to Illerup that you're going to find in English but I'm afraid that, when it comes to detail, there's no alternative to buying the 12 volumes of finds (or 6, if you just want to look at the pictures...they come in pairs. One text and one illustrations) and resign yourself to many hours with a good German dictionary.

It's what I do.

If you ever go to Denmark, pay a visit to Moesgard museum near Arhus.
There is one room there which holds a lot of finds from Illerup-Adal .
The museum store has all 12 volumes in stock, at least last year when i was there.
If you go there around 25th and 26th July 2009 you can also see the Moesgard Viking Moot.
Viking era festival with around 350 fighters on the field, i will be there somewhere in the battle line.
