York Roman festival

Coming soon on the weekend of 23rd and 24th May.
We have managed our goal of keeping this a free event for everyone for another year following a successful fund raising auction. Anyone is welcome to come along and be involved as the York Roman festival is open to all. If anybody wants to help out or take part then please get in touch.
Althougth we have some fringe events happenning in the city the main focus is the living history camp that is situated right in the centre of York next to the library.
many talks and displays are happenning throughout the day in the camp. Here is the main programme.


Library Gardens
11:00 Living History Camp opens with displays by Roman potter, weaver, blacksmith, woodturner, cooking, medicine, bathhouse, arms and armour & religion.
2:30 Recruitment for children to join the roman army and take part in a battle drill
3:00 Lord Mayor arrives to inspect the Roman soldiers
3:30 Childrens’ shield painting competition judging by the Lord Mayor. *
4:00 Childrens’ battle drill
4:30 Recreation of a Roman religious ceremony
5:00 Author Ben Kane will be talking about
The Forgotten Legion, the first book in his epic Roman trilogy
6:00 Camp closes

11:45 Muster for March in Deans Park near The Minster
12:00 March of Roman soldiers through the city begins
1:00 Roman soldier tour. Constantine’s Statue at The Minster

The Minster Undercroft

Pullman Bus Roman tour
A special Roman themed tour of the city. Starts from Exhibition square at 10.00, and runs every 45 mins.



* Children can make their own Roman shield either in camp or at home and bring it along to be judged. Ideas for making one can be found on our website.
