Vindolanda: plus ça change...
#1
What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.

Ecclesiastes was right. An expenses scandal in Vindolanda antedates the current scandals in the British parliament by some eighteen centuries.

It is comforting to know that civilization has been down this road before.

"Prudent men are wont to say--and this not rashly or without good ground--that he who would foresee what has to be should reflect on what has been, for everything that happens in the world at any time has genuine resemblance to what happened in ancient times." -- Niccolo Machiavelli

Oh that Niccolo... what a guy!

Or just remember Alexander's treasurer Harpalus, who enjoyed himself in Babylon while Alexander was off in the upper satrapies then high-tailed it for Helas when Alexander reappeared and started asking questions ...

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.
