So, Armstrong did not say "a man" but, as we always suspected, "man": here's the link.
The researcher who seems to have the last word on this matter, seems to be a decent chap, presenting Armstrong's error as something praiseworthy ("Armstrong may have subconsciously drawn from his poetic instincts to utter a phrase that, far from being incorrect - was perfect for the moment"). Besides, he publishes his results immediately after he has finished his investigations, instead of postponing it to next July's fortieth anniversary, when he could have generated a lot of additional publicity.
