More movie stuff from Britannia
#1
Here's that other project we have been working on. It's Nottingham, the new Ridley Scott epic with Mr Crowe.
Again, we have to be careful about what we feature, but this beautiful little youtube clip was taken by a member of the public at a distance - so fair game!

Not Roman I must stress  , but still vaguely historical.
The armoury/props dept have aimed for early 1200's even though the story of Robin Hood itself is obviously largely fantasy and hard to pin down.

We were doing combat scenes on the beach, some of the other posters here like Medicus Matt have been heavily involved.

Bit more than vaguely mate...all that stuff we were doing? That was Prince Louis' invasion of England in the summer of 1216.

Your pardon is begged... you were privvy to a lot more briefings/ino that I was.

The sum total of what I was told was that the armory/props bloke said "we're doing some French invasion scene or other this week!"

If you'd payed more attention rather than spending all your time drawing things in the sand....

Nobody's actually said that that's what's going on but I figured "Hmmm...it's KING John, a bunch of Baron's, some of whom aren't being exactly friendly and huge french army....I'm going to guess at 1216".

Course, I might be completely wrong...it might be the great invasion of 1212 when the French came steaming over to demand an apology for us having called them something rude to do with cheese...and monkeys.

As if anyone would believe that the French could cross the Channel in those pesky tubs!
Pembrokeshire.. did somebody read that maps upside down?

Anyway, nice number of horsies, VERY impressive. Were you guys on horseback or with the 'boat people'?

That's a 'fallacy' (...say it slowly  )

Anyways- interesting theories about which invasion, be nice if it was tied to a specific date!

As for Pembrokeshire... it was hinted that it's going to be Dover. They would film it at Dover but it's currently a large container port and international housing trust!

We were sort of boat people... but our lads had a number of roles - mainly in stunt-supporting foot-soldier combat scenes (As both English & French).

Quite an effort -- congratulations gentlemen and thanks for sharing.

As usual for Mr. Scott the visuals will be impressive and the historical accuracy much less so. :?

In fact I dare say his most historically accurate film besides The Duelists was Alien... or maybe Blade Runner.

I actually enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven, but I like his early films even more. :|

Again, thanks for the inside scoop. Smile

BITS of Kingdom of Heaven were spot on. I've been reading Arab accounts of the Crusades and the scene after Hatin with Guy and de Chatillon in Saladin's tent is taken straight from an eye-witness account.

As Dan says, it's supposed to be the Kentish coast, which is where Louis landed his invasion force. There were lots of orange balls on sticks on set to indicate the CGI cut in levels. Given that some of these drifted out to sea at one point, I can only asusme that there's going to be a huge CGI Kraken involved at some point...which will be nice.

I found some old disks with our BBC series - Battlefield Detectives shoots on it - Masada & Alesia.

What do you early Empire or indeed Republican chaps think? (Bear in mind it's not our usual period).
