Cornu assembly help

Anyone out there able to give me a play by play on the assembly of a new Deepeeka Cornu :?:

You need to sweat solder the three sections together, just like you would copper pipe. Decide whether you want to use the cornu on either the left or the right and arrange the sections on the bench. You'll need something to keep it together while you solder. Silver solder is best and you'll need a torch. Clean the joins with emory cloth, apply flux, and assemble. The solder should then flow into the heated joint. Once assembled, go to a music store and purchase a proper trumpet mouth piece, the sound will be much improved.

I have soldered pipes before. I feel fairly confident on that part.
I can get the silver solder... is suppose you prefer that because of its strength?

The last part is I can find enough clear pictures to figure out how the bloody thing goes together :?

Because once you silver solder it, that pretty much is the end of it.

I assembled mine to hold with my right hand. It may be just as well assembled for the left.

Do you think it would be okay to use temporarily unsoldered?

And I know this has been mentioned somewhee before, but what mouthpiece do you recommend as a replacement?

I found the Deepeeka cornu very unstable when you don't join the pieces a strong way. When I had to do it fast I just duck-taped it with linnen wrapping covering over it, but I would certainly suggest to solder it properly together, to add much strength.

Slip fit the pieces together and if it doesn't leak too much air, you can use it that way. If you play a horn of any kind, and are used to a certain mouthpiece, just use that one...assuming it will fit the tube. Might want to take the piece closest to the mouthpiece to a horn shop and see what's available. It's possible they can resize that tube to fit what you want.

Sure would be easier to transport if it could be disassembled, wouldn't it?

I have put it together, and no it didn't quite fit properly as it was... a little man-handling was required :wink:

We all had an interesting time trying to make it talk; but in the end, our veteran horn players won out. Go figure.
My sound was reminiscent of a pre-pubescent moose that had just stubbed its hoof on a rock :roll:

I have gotten the proper flux and silver solder to sweat solder the components, as you all were definitely correct in saying that it would not be stable enough to be stand on its own.
I really appreciate the help and quick responses. It is so great to know that I am not alone in this, and there is such a great forum like this for us all to come and share the wealth!

I kind of over-soldered it a bit :lol:
A slight bit unsightly, but after bit of fine sanding, it is not too bad.

Should hold together.

For a mouthpiece, I recommend a beginner one unless you are a horn player. Tell them you want a 7C or 5C trumpet mouthpiece. That is what most people start with. If you know a horn player, they may be able to recommend something else. I needed more airflow, so I had a 13A4A bored out 1/16th so I could move more air... A trombone mouthpiece will work too, again I recommend a beginner one, But I am not famiailar with their sizes. They are larger,, so more air flows. Really depends on what you are comfortable with. My daughter can play it with her french Horn mouthpiece. Trumpet mouthpieces of the 7C variety run $20 or so. An Experienced player may have one to give you, if you know anyone (it is usually upgraded 3-4 years after starting). Yamaha is one company (more expensive), Conn, etc cetc.

Over Soldering solution... I did that too, I wrapped some 2 OZ leather around the joints and tied it down tight, then neatsfooted it. Hides all the sins and the somewhat crappy joints...

The Cornu-ist actually has the mouthpiece with him as he trolls about music stores finding the appropriate one for him.

I must say, the first blast from it (My optio was a military bugler) done inside of my basement almost caused an involuntary bowel release :lol:
I can well imagine the startle effect on the battlefield up close... I think of the battle horns on the latest War of the Worlds :!:

ps - I quite like the idea of wrapping the joints in light leather! Do you have pictures of your solution Rusty?

pps - Did any of you have to adjust the curvatures to accomodate the player's height?

As far as pictures go, I'll shoot some as soon as I have the leather wrap in place
