American Museums with Roman Collections
#1
Hi,

I'm planning to send out details of the Online Course in Roman Mosaics to museums in the States and just wanted to know which ones have Roman collections, with mosaics would be great.

Just the names would be fine and I'll look them up. I will then email them and ask for the deetails of their Education managers.

Thanks

One Museum for your list should be The Getty here in Los Angeles.

They have two museums, and while both probably have mosaics, their location in Malibu, The Villa, certainly does.

And the Villa

Good Luck with your project.

Thanks,
I had a quick look at them but I can't find the contacts page for the Villa Museum. I'll go back and have another look.
They've got the lovely reproduction of the fountain there haven't they?
Cheers

Just had a look and the contact details were cunningly hidden under a link which said 'contact us'. It's hardly surprising that I couldn't find it

Oh those museum curators... they are a tricky bunch. You have to watch them carefully.

I have not been to the Villa yet but hope to go later this summer (when my grandson is back and all of our schedules allow). It is said to be an exacting replica of an ancient Roman villa and the photos certainly bear this out.

The LA County Museum of Art is currently running a special exhibit on Pompeii which includes mosaics but I do not know if they have any in their permanent collection. Here is a link to their site just in case:

Also...

The Muzeo in Anaheim (not far from Disneyland) had an excellent exhibit last year dealing with ancient Rome. Again this was a special exhibit and I do not think there collection includes much on Rome however because they did enjoy success with that ehibit they might be interrested in your information.
