Our gladiator show at Kelmarsh
#1
Just a few images -

Standard bouts & a few 'novelties' (Including bringing down a crupellarius with a hammer  - as a homage to the original revolt in Gaul).

A few more (Hoplomachus casting a spear at a secutor... amd a provocator nearly getting netted).

Yep... around his heavily padded head! (The British public demands such outrageous acts of public violence)

It's a hologram!

Actually - we have x2 large almost identical hammers.

One (real iron) gets brought on to the arena by Charon... he is seen and heard to be tapping the odd metal stake in with it. Or walking around and letting it thud on the ground etc.

Then when the combat starts - he puts it down near a discarded cloak or other props and picks up the identical latex hammer.

Then you hear the crowd gasp or wince as it makes a THUD sound against the skull!

(One woman said after our first show this Saturday- that she 'was nearly sick' when she saw the hammer smashed onto the back of a dead gladiator's head...

... job done!!!!  )

Wicked!! That is the way to do it for sure!

Just looking at the photos, the body stances give the impression of weight too. Excellent display shots!

Please tell me you have a big mark on the handle to make sure he picks up the right one.

Occasionally he whispers "Is this the right hammer?" as he approaches the 'dead' gladiators... just to see if they get up and run!

A picture taken of our crupellarius by Will in our group.

The crupellarius is a monstrous old time re-enactor John Quadling - he stands about 6ft 3ins, is built like two legionaries welded together- and moves very fast!

I tend to get out of the way very fast when he roars around the arena in this kit, or stand somewhere safe (like Switzerland).
