Quote:Homeric hero's fighting

Not very heroic is it?
Attacking a chap who's armed with just a wooden sword.

Excellent pictures.

Right! And it's the briton soldier who's the winner.

We laughed a lot because of this Big Grin

That was our civil war scenario, with on one side Magnus Maximus briton army (the Letavi) reinforced by germanic federates, and on the other side Theodosius eastern army (the Herculiani).
On the second day the usurper side was supposed to win. But not all the Herculiani - including the tribun Anthemius - known that they were supposed to loose this time.

Our germanic allies launched the first assault, most got slaughtered as they got in contact when they where only supposed to harass the Herculiani. So we, the bold Seguntienses of Magnus Maximus, decided to attack.
Our cuneus didn't the work quite well. And our remaining federates didn't paid attention to which roman was on their side, and which wasn't, and several of us got stabbed in the back. Ahem!

Most of the soldiers on both sides were lying on the ground. Remained alive the commanders, including Adwyn who was portraying the usurper himself. He wasn't supposed to fight, so he had took his blunt metal spatha with him (as you know, the rest of us use to fight on the field only with fake wooden weapons).
It was a bit of a surprise for him to see all his men dead, and a quite unhappy guy in lorica squamata coming for his own life! So he grabbed up his metal sword. Alternatively, he could have fought only with his fustis. Not a very manly way either.

Anthemius had the upper side in the duel until Adwyn told him "Hey, you were supposed to loose, please die!" The tribun answered "what?" and got hit. I ultimately ressurected to help my liege execute him.

There was a lot of other heroic deeds in the event. A few other exemples.

We managed to capture the infamous Twrch Tryth.

Bran also caught an enormous fish in the nearby river. That's living history.

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Fishing the hard way with an historical line ! Great game ! A brass hook, a linen line and a lead, nothing more. I used a bit of bread as bait. First it was mainly a stupid challenge. I bet that I would fish into the river along the old mill which is now the museum. I did it and finally a fish was suicidal enough to get caught.

As you can see, I was really proud but also a bit surprised. If I can find some more information about roman fishing I'll try bigger predators like eels or Esox lucius...

To be honest, my line is not proved to be fully historical. I just took brass number 8 fishooks similar to ones found near roman villas in the Saône river with similar hammered long lead. For the threads I know that linen was used in Roman times and the first fishing manual from England 1515 recomend it.

Bye !
