I wouldn't call 300 horrible. Just watch it from an different angle. You know that people like to overreact and make up elephants out of mices. If you watch the movie 300 out of an spartiate vision as if you were in the frontline yourself with horrible beasts and 1000's of men attacking you it's easy to see things out of the proportions and consider yourself superhero like by just opposing them.

Try to watch the movie again and who knows perhaps you'll appreciate it a bit more but forget historical accuracy in 300 because I don't think accuracy was the vision of the creator
i like very much 300 for musics and battle scenes (also because i'm a fan of Frank's graphic novel) and i have nothing to say abaut tath movie. But when we see a identic clone with different actors and set in a different age (and -oh my god- even weapons and shields are identic) that refers to historical events and not to a comic book....well....

Bracers cover watch "tans" on wrists (and look butch). It took me forever to find a bronze cuff to cover my pale, pale watch-strap line on my wrist. For TV/movies, body make-up over the wrist is probably a no-go. (But bracers? Off to costuming - they gots lots of bracers!)

Up Pompeii (1971):

*****
(Better than Gladiator, I´d say)
There´s also a TV series. Smile

===

Funny quote:
Lurcio: [in the sauna] I can't see a bloody thing, can you?
[naked woman passes by when Lurcio is in front of the camera]
Lurcio: Eh, was that a naked woman just then? Damn, I missed her.
[naked man passes by]
Lurcio: But you couldn't miss him now, could you?

Synopsis, cast, etc.:

Quote:Roman slave Lurkio inadvertently becomes the possessor of a scroll naming the proposed assassins of the Emperor Nero. Administering to the participants of his master's orgy guests seems small compared to the trouble the scroll brings - but all are in for a nasty shock when Mount Vesuvius decides to erupt.

I wouldn't call 300 horrible.

He didn't call 300 horrible- he said this other movie was a horrible, 300-like inaccurate- the new movie is horrible as well as inaccurate like 300... And of course 300 wasn't intended to be accurate- it was a comic book, so the art was the primary thing.

That Pompeii quote is aweome- I have to find that movie LOL

Actually I am looking forward to this rendition of Spartacus.
The Segis are of course out of period but so is the rest of the style as was already said.
As a gladiator I am however very happy to see the first movie that shows galdiators with actual gladiatorial helmets, greaves and shields.
Of course the helmets are again the imperial types with closed faced visors, and not the republican open face helmets that would have been worn in Spartacus times, and why they gave an axe to a secutor is also puzzeling...
The strangest thing about this TV series (13 episodes are planed) is that they actually recycled the gear from 300
Maybe sombody though Spartacus = Spartan = 300?

FORTES

Director: William Pellegrini

Producer: Carolyn Vye | VYCE Productions

TRT: 7:43

Super 16mm

Best Ancient period short film yet! The only problem is that they used 1st Century gear for Caesar's Gallic War period.
This short film rates 1/4 Bracer for out of period gear. ZERO plastic spears and Five Stars

The Last Legion (2007) ==== ^^^^ ***

I would have enjoyed this movie much more years ago before I knew much about the Roman Legions. Not bad if you can ignore the leather armor out of period poor Legionary gear
fantasy Eastern empire armor outfits, and female warrior from India. It escapes the worst five bracer rating by having long sleeve tunics and trousers appropriate to the Late Empire and and a visually impressive Hadrian's wall recreation. The worse rating of five plastic spears is avoided for decent spears and swords but look out for the very strange ballista design! If I could just burn down those Hollywwod prop houses maybe we would see better gear in the movies. Or maybe not. On the political correctness side this movie seems to completly ignore the Christian nature of the late empire even having the future Caesar's tutor as some kind of Pagen maybe Druid witchdoctor. Interestly a late Republican Shield appears in the Generals tent - maybe it's part of his antique collection!

Four Bracers ==== Four Plastic Spears ^^^^ Three Stars ***

Precinct 9 For its seemingly amaturish look, it has to be one of the best Sci-fi movies I have seen!
Actually has a moral to it. A well done and enjoyable film!
Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

It has Romans or other Ancient period peoples in it?

http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0361240/ check it out on IMDB.

[url:3htrelzf]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6oqtWD3ajk[/url] - one of the battle sequences in the movie

==== 4 Bracer Rating for historically accuracy. The general story sticks to the traditional sparacus story, however the legions equipment is RATHER laughable! Leather segs, and again.. they LOVE the leather bracers!! Bring on the butch romans!! Imperial Shields... if you can even call them that.. and Helmets that can only be described as rusty lobster trooper helms!!

In fairness to the equipment accuracy i guess it probably had something to do with the "for TV" aspect of it, and the sheer volume of soldiers they have in some scenes, if you look that the video above. if you look at about 3:56 into it, and look close enough you can notice that alot of the legionaries dont have swords just shields!.. Do'h!

>>>>> PLASTIC spears, for weapon accuracy, dont think the spears are anything resembling hastas or pila!..

think possibly the only redeeming feature is that their archers look reasonable! but why they are marching in the same line as the legionaries towards the enemy im not too sure!!

it does get a *** (and a half) rating from me tho.. i am one for seeing past the grosse inaccuracies and its a generally enjoyable film, and does capture the spirit of the spartacus story, love the little twist at the end!. Doesnt come HIGHLY recommended, but might be slightly more enjoyable than Cyclops Wink
Lucius Duccius Rufinus Aka Kevin Rhynas.

I've just read in Newsweek that Criterion has released a DVD set of three films based on George Bernard Shaw plays, one of them being "Androcles and the Lion" from 1952. This is a rare film. I saw it once on TV as a child and it appeared in the early 80s on VCR, but I haven't seen it since. Not a great film, but it's a chance to see Victor Mature playing a Roman for a change, and the always-enjoyable Robert Newton as Ferrovius, the Christian soldier-convert who decides not to be a martyr when the gladiators annoy him too much. Recommended.

Indeed you are correct John, Criterion is releasing a 3-Disc Shaw set that also includes his Caesar And Cleopatra starring Claude Rains as Gaius Julius.

Criterion does some of the very best disc mastering (back in the day the quality of their Laser Discs was legendary and the absolute gold standard) and their catalog of classic is truly impressive.

More info on this 3-Disc set may be found here:
