I've just read in Newsweek that Criterion has released a DVD set of three films based on George Bernard Shaw plays, one of them being "Androcles and the Lion" from 1952. This is a rare film. I saw it once on TV as a child and it appeared in the early 80s on VCR, but I haven't seen it since. Not a great film, but it's a chance to see Victor Mature playing a Roman for a change, and the always-enjoyable Robert Newton as Ferrovius, the Christian soldier-convert who decides not to be a martyr when the gladiators annoy him too much. Recommended.
