help with a helmet
#1
ok, so not sure if i am on the right sub-board for this, but i am having issues with a roman helm i bought. first let me say i play a larp, so and tend to fight solo or in small groups, moving around alot so the only thing that might hit me is a boffer weapon. the helm i purchased looks great, very well constructed, but it lacks any padding or webbing inside, i stuffed some foam i had into it to "feel it out" yet i need someway to keep it more secure than 3-4 inch open cell foam, and also a way to keep the cheek flaps from knocking my glasses around so bad, was thinking of maybe soldering the hinges at a certain point, so that if i ever needed i could break it back apart.

any idea's for a secure way to wear it on my head?

army kevlar webbing, weilded to the inside?

All helmets will need an actual liner. Most will sew a simple arming cap and use that. Also, glue some leather or fabric to the cheek pieces to help pad those as well.

I take it authenticity is no issue here.

You can wear a woolen hat in the helmet as an arming cap, or several hats if the helmet is very big on you.

You can also glue padding to the inside. You could use this manual: http://www.armae.com/Actualitesetmanuel ... helmet.htm

I would also recommend not wearing glasses with your helmet. The cheek guards should be fastened tightly and should not move much when your helmet is properly done up. That said, cheek guards and glasses do not go comfortably together, to say nothing of authenticity. If you really cannot get by without your glasses, then I would seriously recommend daily disposable contact lenses. A month's supply should last you the year, and will not get in the way of your cheek guards or stick out like a sore thumb to anyone who happens to see you.

yeah luckily for me authenticity isnt a issue, comfort and secure wear ability is.

thou at this point i might attempt to trade it for something else, either a manica, or a different style helm as this one is a bit heavy for my needs

I agree with Crispus though, any helmet will make glasses an issue.
I wear contact lenses, as, unlike my friend Crispus, with is eagle like vision, I could not read a license plate if it was 2 feet from me,
let alone 12.... :roll:

and any helmet with cheek pieces will need some padding and also securely tied on ....

Here's a photo of my helmet padding:

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/helmint.jpg

It can just be a few layers of wool or some other kind of padding. Usually we glue it in, and it's not to hard to peel it out when the padding gets old and rotten and gooey from sweat. (Mine currently looks like old bacon!)

Hanging off the back of the neckguard is a long doubled or pair of leather laces. They are brought forward, crossed under the chin, and go through the rings seen peeking out from under the cheekpiece linings. Then tied under the chin. Very secure! How well your glasses will fit will depend on how wide the rim of the helmet is, and how close the *tops* of the cheekpieces are to your head. If your helmet does not have chin tie rings, you may need to add them:

But for LARP purposes, you might get away with some other kind of fitting, or simply punch some holes. But yes, you definitely don't want it all banging around on your head unsecured and unpadded!

thats what i am missing then mine currently doesnt have any loop-holes mounted on the inside. shouldnt be hard to make and mount them with either rivets or Chicago screws.
