Hieronymus of Cardia
#1
Does somebody knows any articles or books (with the exception of Jane Hornblower s monography)
dedicated to analyze Hieronymus
of Cardia as a military historian ?

Hornblower is "the" monograph. There is Hieronymus of Cardia by TS Brown as well as Hieronymus of Cardia and Early Seleucid Mythology. Many authors have essays on Hieronymus as a source in their monographs on the history of the Diadochoi - Anson Eumenes of Cardia; Bosworth The Legacy of Alexander; Billows Antigonus Monophthalmus for example.

There seems almost an industry that flourishes around "Hieronymus as the direct source" for the bulk of Diodorus' 18-20 and that Diodorus can be seen to "mirror" the Cardian. The constant judgements of The One-Eyed as "in revolt" with respect to the central authority and his "illegal" grasping for power might give one pause. As might the benevolent - near laudatory - treatment of his great enemy Ptolemy.

Admirers of Monophthalmus, critical faculties in select suspension (Billows for example), explain all this as the opinions (or judgement of hindsight) of Diodorus. Doesn't really suit the pedalled notion of an "uncritical copyist and a poor one at that".

Ἐπὶ τοὺς πατέρας, ὦ κακαὶ κεφαλαί, τοὺς μετὰ Φιλίππου καὶ Ἀλεξάνδρου τὰ ὅλα κατειργασμένους

Wicked men, you are sinning against your fathers, who conquered the whole world under Philip and Alexander!
