The Peloponnesian War
#1
For those looking for some Hoplite warfare (or Roman for that matter) you should check out Mount & Blade by TaleWorlds. It's a SPG that has a free trial download. The trial is good to level 7 over and over again and if you wish to continue (and I think you might need to buy it to use any of the mods) it's very reasonably priced.

While the core game itself is outstanding, the real gem is that the developer has made the codes / porting info free to all which has allowed for a very expansive list of demo's, mod's in progress and finished mods covering everything from sticks and stones to sci-fi.

IMHO games that stick to the medieval era general fair best. Two that seem to run against this are The Peloponnesian War and 263 BC (a Roman Mod). Neither are finished yet; 263 BC is still a work in progress (although there is an older version avalible that can still be played) and The Peloponnesian War while playable hasn't been fully finished (you still play on the stock M&B map).

Here's the forum run:

TaleWorlds Forum » Module Development » The Pioneer's Guild - Mods » The Cartographer's Guild - Released Mods » Peloponnesian War
