Kalkriese Segmentata: A new interpretation of the Evidence?
#1
Hello folks, perhaps not the place to post this, but I figured the mods can decide.

I have just recieved(at looong last... Big Grin ) my Kalkriese Seg from Erik,
and it is a little different from the original; posted on his site.

I will not go into too many details as such, as he will be posting it on his site first, but find it quite an interesting piece.
It is based on newer finds from the Kalkriese site and Vindonissa as well, (could be Vindo bonna, memory like a seive  ), and I was totally unaware of these, except for the hints, until now.
I was wondering if anyone else here had any more info on this other than that commonly available?

News to me, but I'm not clear whether this is new evidence or a new interpretation of the existing (rather limited) evidence. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were being a tease ;-) ) I sense Mike Thomas on the edge of his seat...

I'm afraid I will have to keep you waiting until Erik posts the new pics on his site, as I promised.
I haven't had time to do more than take it out of thebox and have a quick examination of it so far, as I am getting ready to go to work.

Sorry boys, a little longer.......

Well, it appears the pictures are now available for public consumption, so here is the link to them.
Seems I am trumped too, by a flashy squamata? Square scales? Is that not termed something else?Anyways, I can assure you the back photo does not quite do it justice, but the proof will be in the wearing. Smile

that segmentata is interesting, but also my look got focussed on that squamata.

@seggie, I think I still like the Corbridge pattern more... And no buckle closures at the front and back, it seems.

Doesn't appear the evidence was convincing enough for the buckles, perhaps?
but the quality of the piece is quite good, and the evidence I have seen for this shoulder plate is
quite intrigueing. I cant help wondering if the rest of the shoulder plates were not perhaps curved too, aka Trajans column and other artistic depictions?

It seems to be a theoretical interpretation of one fragment of iron plate from Vindonissa that's roughly triangular in shape, broken at the end opposite the apex which is rounded and one adjacent edge is curved, one is flat. The trouble is that it's MUCH thinner than the extant, definite, upper shoulder guard also from the site (not even half as thick if the diagrams are accurate) so unless one assumes a massive variation in thickness that's a large issue; moreover the triangular piece, according to the diagram, has several rivets in its mid-body, at least one of which stands 7mm proud of the iron surface- none of which fits with it being a shoulder guard. The fragment does have a short section of what presumably is copper alloy binding, however it's not the very narrow form of the Kalkriese breastplate, and the definite shoulder guard section has none.

I've read it suggested the triangular piece might be a Kalkriese girth hoop fragment, but the rivets mid-body also left me finding this difficult to accept- and that's easier than seeing it as a section of shoulder guard.

I believe there is more evidence than that available to make the other assumptions, I will see if I have permission to post it here.

Wow, 80 downloads, but no comments......obviously no one is that interested in a discussion?
Perhaps there was no need to share the info after all?

I've seen the reconstruction now on Erik's website. I can now see how the extrapolation of the rounded and curved shoulder guards from Vindonissa and the 2007/2008 Kalkriese finds fit in now.

I guess that we are so used to seeing the Corbridge version of the shoulder guards that this rounded version does seem a little alien to the eye but I like it! I look forward to seeing it up close mate!

Ahhh, perhaps a comment like, 'I downloaded the files but can't get them to open' would have provided
a topic of conversation in it's own right?
something along the lines off
Crispus wrote -'I downloaded the files but can't get them to open'
And Byron(that would be me) replied, 'no problem mate, I will e-mail them to you, then perhaps you can view them then'
then you could have said...well you get the drift? Smile

I am thinking of wearing it to Rome, Ade, so maybe then.
Yes it does take a little getting used to......

Sorry Byron,

I didn't intend any rudeness. It was just to explain why I hadn't commented yet. Please do send me the photos. I wait with baited breath to see the new evidence. Big Grin
