Deurne helmet exhibition
#1
From 18 December 2009 until December 2010 there is a exhibition about the Deurne helmet at The National Beiaard and Natural Museum in Asten (Brabant-Netherlands).
Have not been there yet.

Thanks for posting this, Garrelt. Seems I've another visit on my to do list. Sounds like an interesting exhibition, as I don't know that much about that helmet, yet, and I hope to have a copy of it in the future.

I have sent some photos of Comitatus riders in our versions of the helmet, and I have been looking at some photos of the new reconstruction taking shape in iron, silver and gold. It's a thing of beauty, and should tell us something about the mind of the person who made it.

The price is about five times the amount you would pay for our iron and brass versions. Which is almost tempting, if you are mad.

Jurjen.

Not another brass copy I hope.
Those are enough around.
Are you going for the iron inner helmet, with the gilded silver embossed outer shell and silvered rivets?
Looking forward to see the end result.

John.
Yes i know a good replica doesn't come cheap , but then again it will be worth every penny.

Knowing myself, it indeed wouldn't be a Indian made version Big Grin Don't know yet if I'm going to make it myself of save some money for a while to get it made. But first I've enough other items to add to my collection, so it may take a while.

Yes, this helmet has been always the number 1. on my mind. Aitor Iriarte has studied the helmet extensively and created a wonderful replica of the iron core. I would pay for a good replica of this helmet but then it should be exactly like the original. Do you know how lucky you guys are indeed, being able to take a bus and check out artefacts like this whenever you like...

Very nice helmet, Garrelt! Can you please tell us who has made it and perhaps give us a more detailed photo?

It was a very nice and unexpected present.
It is made of a sort of resin and it was agreed on as not to be used for reproduction!
I only wore it for that particular Photoshoot.
After that never again, agreed is agreed

There are a lot of detail Photo's of the original on the net.
At home I have a copy of a publication dating 1911 written by Dr. M.A. Evelein about the helmet and the other finds.

The strange thing is that the helmet itself is, right now, on display in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden. Unless that's a very good copy. Here's a photo I made on February 9.

As far as I know, the one in Leiden is a copy.

Putting replicas on display is something which you can find in a lot of museums.
Sometimes these replicas have minute faults in detail.
Makes them difficult to sell as " the original".

I don't know if is the original Deurne helmet itself on display.
It also can be another copy.
With the original in a safe place.

Will they be showing the other bits and pieces?

I am sure some of the Deurne leather sheeting was once shown in the RMO.

When I saw it, one fragment had a very obvious brass ring stitched on to it. I'd love to know whether this fragment was part of the bag or the tent.

The ring was, in this find complex, part of the helmet bag.
Brass and, or metal rings were and are used for re-enforcing the holes/eyelets for tent poles or ropes.
Ask a tent or sail maker how they do this.

For you first question:
I don't know what is on display.
Have not seen photos on the net.

Aha!

That makes a whole lot of sense.

Carol van Driel Murray did not mention it in her assessment of the tent fragments, so I suspected as much.

Here is the piece I was speaking about:
