Well what is the good Doctor doing in England? He should be in South America. Didn't he ever watch john Carpenter's The Thing ... ?

Childs: I just cannot believe any of this voodoo bullshit.
Palmer: Childs, it happens all the time, man. They're falling out of the sky like flies. Government knows all about it, right, Mac?
Childs: You believe any of this voodoo bullshit, Blair?
Palmer: Childs, Childs... Chariots of the Gods, man. They practically own South America. I mean, they taught the Incas everything they know.

When in doubt Hollywood always has the answers, and this fall everyone will think they know exactly what happened to the Ninth Legion. After all, the Persians did use elephants and rhinos at Thermopylae ... didn't they? :?

Final proof that the "disappearance" was somewhat exaggerated.

The Ninth marched far to the north and made the tactical mistake of camping by the Loch Ness where they were all eaten that very night. Ingesting the Armor and weapons was a major cause of the dramatic decline of the lake population making sitings so rare today.

That's odd. "PhD, Archaeology, 2000, Bournemouth University ..."? They seem to have omitted him from the List of Bournemouth PhD Theses. (And he's not in the UK Theses database, either. Must be an oversight.)
Perhaps he is a Crytoarchaeologist. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoarchaeology

Yes, I like that site.

I see on wikipedia that this Miles Russell cites Fronto as a source for a disaster of some sort in Britain. The passage in question is this:

Quote:Again under the rule of your grandfather Hadrian what a number of soldiers were killed by the Jews, what a number by the Britons!

Fronto, Ambr. 236, or page 21 in Loeb II

Loeb editor C.R. Haines says, in regards to the claim about the Britons:

Quote:Not recorded elsewhere; but see Spart. Vit. Hadr. 5.

For the life of me, I can't figure out Spart. Vit. Hadr. 5. Does anyone know to what this alludes?

"Aelius Spartianus" = one of the fictitious authors of the Historia Augusta. The full ref is HA, Hadr. 5.2, a brief mention of a revolt in Britain at the start of Hadrian's reign.

Aelius Spartianus, one of the authors of the Historia Augusta. This same citation would more commonly be quoted as SHA, Vit. Hadr 5 (or SHA, Hadrian, 5).

This paragraph begins:
Quote:On taking possession of the imperial power Hadrian at once resumed the policy of the early emperors,37 and devoted his attention to maintaining peace throughout the world. 2 For the nations which Trajan had conquered began to revolt; the Moors, moreover, began to make attacks,38 and the Sarmatians to wage war,39 the Britons could not be kept under Roman sway...

This is an old-fashioned way of referring to the Historia Augusta. Before Hermann Dessau blew the scriptor's scam apart, it was accepted that a series of different authors (is it six?) wrote the individual biographies. The "author" of the "Life of Hadrian" (Vit. Hadr.) was supposedly named Spartianus (hence, "Spart. Vit. Hadr.").

Edit: Aaaargh! Ross and Jasper were faster.
