Salve,

Title: War and society in imperial Rome 31 BC-AD 284.
Author: B. Campbell.
Place and date of publication: London 2002.
Publisher: Routledge.
ISBN: 0-415-27881-3 (hardback); 0-415-27882-1 (paperback).
Pages: 208.

For its size this volume provides a very good overview of the Roman army in the first three centuries of the imperial period. It provies a concise and compact text touching upon a wide range of subjects without giving in to the vices of oversimplification and generalisation. Well annotated and with an up to date bibliography it caters to those with more than a passing interest as well as the general public. In my opinion it is highly recommendable reading.
