Synthesis

I've encountered the term 'synthesis' a few times now in the context of a light dining garment, but does anyone know what they actually looked like? I've seen pictures of frescoes and mosaics where they're wearing what look like ordinary togas, which I understand were worn on very formal occasions. Is it known if the synthesis was similar, but lighter, or are we talking something completely different?
