A name for my new wife?
#1
I'm a Saxon, she's a Briton (well...I'm English, she's Welsh). I've managed to get her interested in reenactment and we're sorting kit out for her.

I use the name `Audax Victor'...any suggestions for a good authentic 5th Century name for a Romano-British woman?

Give us some clues- hair colour? From where in Wales? Tall/ short? It'd be good to tailor make a real name that fitted...

And welcome to the world of the Welsh wife- mine is from South Wales, and I'm very lucky!

Ahh...we're near Brecon (the Kingdom of Brychan). She has reddish hair (Rufia?), blue eyes, pale skin and short-ish. Typical Briton (in contrast to me being tall, blondish-red and green-eyed). She's from Newport (little place just outside Isca...)

I see this as part of colonising the rest of Britain...

How about Cassia (from the Welsh for Newport)

Or, less seriously

You could go with the Britannia tradition used for all the other South Welsh girls and just call her "Welsh Bird".

Hmm.. Aren't all the Welsh simply 'wealas' to you Saxons?

But seriously: how about Modrun? The name of Modrun is closely related to that of Matrona, the Roman mother goddess. Other forms of her name are Materiana, Modron, Madrun, Madryn, Fadryn and Fadrun. Plus she's from the area, a saint to boot and related to both local families (mother to Ynyr Gwent) and Vortigern (daughter of Vortimer). I dabbled something about here here: http://www.vortigernstudies.org.uk/artfam/modrun.htm

A relative of Vortigern out in Gwent? Ambrosius' original stronghold? Sounds like a bad idea for mere safety.

How about Seren Coch (Red star) or Carys Coch?

Lots of Welsh names here http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/wel.php
And good stuff here http://www.comitatus.net/romanwho.html and here http://www.comitatus.net/research_files ... 4small.pdf

Never. You read too much Geoffrey of Monmouth and not enough history. Ambrosius' stronghold is Amesbury  and he spent his childhood in Brittany. You're thinking of Merlin.

But joking aside, Vortigern or his relatives are linked to SE Wales. It's possible that the family originally hailed from the Gloucester area and had estrates in Wales.

I get one of those `Celtic' looks when I try that and start remembering bits of Tacitus when I tell her all about `Wealhas'.

She approves of the name `Modron' though. Although of course I will be ensuring she appears a good Roman wife despite her British ancestry...

Can I please point out (in all seriousness) that if she uses the name Modron at Britannia events, every time she walks past there will a chorus of "Oooooooh Modron" in a Kenneth Williams type voice.

I don't suppose "Uxor" is a proper choice, then? "Uxorilla" for an endearment-diminutive?

With a group like Britannia, that was unavoidable.

That's us Britunculi isn't it? I'm sure Silvius Bono would have approved. When he wasn't giving it to Ausonius that is...

If she can't handle `Modron' she can be `Clogwyn' and that's the end of it...
