odd depiction of aspis grip

What is going on with this fellow's bicep?? My assumption is that this is an error by the artist, but I have seen this triple-grip depiction of peltae.

This is quite an interesting source !! it seems to me the the rope inside the aspis has indeed a special use !!

Its not that rope, which I think is a truss or the artistic remnant of a truss by the way, but some other rope within the bowl of the aspis. Note the way his other hand is through the grip. I think the artist is just very confused and the thing on his arm is the grip on the other side of the shield, which is a common feature.
