battle of mantinia 207BC
#1
Dear all, recently visited mantinia in arcadia and been trying to make sence of this interesting afray (the third battle of Mantinia ) described by Polybius sand plutarch. This is a not well coverd encounter in recent studies but the few i have come across seem to place the battle to the south of the city .But in Poybius it is absolutly clear that it takes place by a hill and the town is in a very flat place exept for a hill that fits the bill just north of the city but absolutly nothing to the south .Does anybody know of anything that might clarrify this .There is an old volume by Pritchett on topography that covers this in a volume on battlefields but this bit of his writings is not on google books and seems very difficult to find .If anybody has read this section that would be very interesting .And also Polybius mentions the territory of Elisphasii ,if i new which direction this was from mantinia it would clear another issue up,just hoping against hope, mike
