Hello Im new and this is my first post. Anyway I like to read about the celts but I have a couple of questions that I cant really find answers too. In ancient times when celtic tribes did not have a professional fulltime standing army Im pretty sure a celtic chieftian had bodyguards to protect him form assassination etc. But my question is who were the bodyguards and what social class were they drwan form.? What I mean is were they landowning nobles? and if so who ran the noblmans farm while he was guarding the chief? If not were they simply non-landholding salaried bodyguards? If so what were they paid with and were they recruited form the peasants or the noble families? i.e. perhaps the second son of a noble who did not inherit his lands? Also did the other nobles or flaiths have bodyguards of their own?
