My new beautiful knife!

Hi All,

I thought i'd post here the thing of beauty that is winging its way to me very soon.

It is based around this picture from Paul Elliots website:

I know that pattern welding isn't present in the picture of the original - but it is something i'd like to explore further as a transitionary aspect of the post 5th century identity. I've always been a believer in the hybridisation of certain aspects of craft acquisition.

It was made for me by my friend and very talented armourer/blacksmith Steve Mitchell who teaches at the National Blacksmithing college in Hereford. He can do pretty much anything given the right refs...

The handle is antique pre 1945 ivory - pattern welding all done by steve at his forge.. it wasn't cheap, but It will serve as pride of place in my teaching collection

It's a beauty, all right. Excellent workmanship. Does it hold an edge? Will it slice a turnip?

Yes, it has a good cutting edge - its not visible in the picture, but the cutting edge has been forged on separately. This is how Steve constructed the piece:

"The blade is mild steel, 0.5% carbon steel and bandsaw blade pattern welded. The bit is spring steel (0.55%) and should keep a good edge. I've heat treated it so you can sharpen it easily.

The rivets were forged down from some 16mm round copper, so all of the components are hand made"
