I saw this last night on the Discovery Channel. It was fascinating to hear the words of Roman soldiers from almost 2,000 years ago. I thought this was one of the better documentaries on the Roman Army. I knew that the patricians and equestrians regularly corresponded with each other, I did not know that the rank and file did as well. It implies a regular Post service for non-military correspondence (unless soldier's personal correspondence was considered to be in the "official business" category of the period). I was particularly moved to hear the junior officer's words begging for clothing for his men, which he could not obtain locally. Good leaders are timeless.

This replays on Saturday 2 AUG at 1200 hrs on the Discovery Channel, check local listings. Highly recommend.
