Is it actually specifically the Roman gladiator stuff you're interested in or just sword fighting in general? Just doing a quick Google I can see there's a "New York city sword fighting club" that does medieval swordsmanship and stuff. I'm sure there are bound to be other similar places. Why not investigate that first and later, once you can get some gladiator kit, you could expand into gladiator fighting? You might even get some of the medieval sword fighters interested. I don't think you'll really get very far without some really good gladiator kit. Your papier-mache helmet is a good effort but not really much good for an authentic reenactment. Dunno how else I can help, sorry.
