7th Century padded Riding coat

I thought I'd post a few pics of the riding coat with wool padding that I made for mr Medicus Matt in return for my lovely beautiful sword scabbard....

Its a fully lined 7th Century Eastern style calf length riding coat with 5mm woollen wadding, kind of like an extra bit of armour..

Nice isn't it? I reckon with that over the top of my new rivetted mail I'll be nice and safe (and warm) this season.

Robert, it's primarily for my 6th/7th century Germanic kit (based upon the war coats depicted in pressblechs of the period) but which, in turn, seem (like the helmets of the period) to be modelled on riding coats worn by Sassanian cavalry.

Robert, indeed - there are a few different refs for the 7th C coat. Not to be confused with the coats from Antinoopolis which have a complicated shaping pattern and the long arms. These are based around some of the Sogdian examples at the New York museum of Art which were exhibited a few years ago. Also the Dura wall paintings have similar examples depicted with foot soldiers wearing baggy persian style trousers tucked into calf length boots.

The mummies of Urumchi also exhibit very similar styles of riding coat - some from as far back as the late Bronze Age. Sometimes they have decorative rope work around the edges - similar to the tunics of the 7th Century from the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester
