The Camillus Reforms
#1
I know very little about the so called Camillan reforms. This is an era of the republic that up until recently did not interest me very much. It seems to me that this is a fairly controversial subject, and that not many details are known for certain.

Can anyone recommend books or links that detail these reforms, or that even cover this era in fairly good detail?

Thanks.

All I can find is that Livy records him being recalled from exile in 399BC by a resolution of the Comitia Curiata. Nothing on his actual reforms.

You probably already know that. Most of my books deal with a later period, sorry.
Yes, that is all I can find. Livy seems to be all that there is.

I can't say for certain if this is the same Camillus, but I was reading the Robert Graves translation of Suetonius' Twelve Caesar and in the section on Claudius, it has this :

"Camillus the rebel felt sure that Claudius could be frightened into abdication and retirement merely by an impudent, threatening and insulting letter, without the need of declaring war; and Claudius did in fact summon his leading advisers and ask them whether he should comply with Camillus' demands."
The Camillus referred to by Livy is the Camillus who supposedly returned the Rome to beat off the Gauls, who were sacking Rome, in 390 BC. The Camillus referred to by Suetonius is a different, later and far less noble individual.
Not just Livy - Plutarch has a Life of Camillus, and there's stuff in Dionysius of Halicarnassus, too.

My god, we're cooking, now. Despite not being able to spell Plutarch in the address, this looks helpful.
