Events that allow women portraying soldiers?
#1
I guess most of us have read a lot of opinions regarding women portraying soldiers. And I know that that debate is not going to end anytime soon. So I'd like to ask for it to not continue in this topic.

But the fact is, we do have women in our group, and some of them prefer impressions of the military kind. So I would like to ask about people's experience with this topic, and because we're a European group, I would most appreciate information about events in Europe.

I do know some events that allow this, and I know many don't. The trouble is, many people have strong views on this topic, to the point of giving those with opposing views decidedly unflattering labels. And no matter how bitter a pill the following is, one doesn't wish to hurt the whole group by being seen as pushing some ideology too hard.

So if you could point me in the direction of events that do allow women in "male" impressions, or at least share your experiences regarding this matter, I'd be most grateful.

I have joined a group that allows women to portray soldiers *shudder*

They can do it as well as men on most accounts, and some times a lot better, but I have a bad habit of spotting the obvious femenine aspects of their portrayal (which makes me very unpopular) 8-)
But it is great to have them in events!
However, I will still argue it is less easy for them to portray the earlier legionaries with bare legs (for obvious reasons  )

Now that I have spoken, I can expect a lot of pain...a LOT of pain!!

Avete omnes,
I am from the same group as Appius :-) I have to say that I have no problem with bare legs. I am wearing bracae and leg wraps and greaves... Yes, I serve in the far North - it is a little bit cold here :-)

Couldnt care less. If their boobies are not very profondly visible under their chain mail (unless in the beer tent) and their Segmentata is ok and their hair is not long its ok with me. if their hair is too long but still possible to be hidden under the helmet, they could switch to female dress inbetween displays.

We are living in the 21st century, and you could actually say that every re-enactor when placed back in time would stand out like a red flag !

USA LAfe event Allowed

Bare legs: How do we know that Legionaries didn't have non hairy legs?
Hair removal was very popular in Ancient times. Didn't the Romans even have professional hair pluckers ?

Well dude, I have seen women with hairy legs, and men with bare legs....
One was my german Girlfriend...and she had great legs(when she took care of them).
But I still had no problem telling her legs did not belong to a man....
and the same for men with bare legs....it's nothing to do with hair or no hair, it's the shape....lets just be realistic here.
It's not sexist, it's just a fact.
Now, if you want to talk East German Shotputters, well thats a whole different ball game. :-P My girlfriend was more Katarina Witt material! 8)

Are those events where it is allowed also allowing men to have women impressions? Like a Roman Matrona, or so?

I can fully understand that one or the other woman would like to do a warrior-like impression. I solved the problem since female legionaries didn't exist to chose an impression which is authentic: gladiatrix.

The problem with Elagabalus is that he did not grow old.... Neither did Caracalla.

And when portraying Elagabalus you should always carry a large teardrop shaped black stone with you and make love with young boys and girls.... I would not advise anyone to portray this lunatic emperor...

Some people might find it hard to convincingly pretend to be a fourteen year old boy as well.
