Gladiator school found near Vienna

Ruins of Roman gladiator school found in Austria

Quote:Archaeologists in Austria say they have discovered a large, well-preserved school for Roman gladiators.

The remains of the school, at a site east of the modern capital, Vienna, were found using radar imagery.

The school was part of a Roman city which was an important military and trade outpost 17 centuries ago.

Though excavations have yet to begin, the radar images show thick walls surrounding the compound which contained 40 small cells for fighters.

There is also a training area and a large bathing area in the Carnuntum ruins.

Outside the walls, radar scans show what archaeologists believe was a cemetery for those killed during training.

Interestingly, they discovered the site with ground-penetrating radar. Evidently technology has advanced to the state where they would feel confident enough to make such a conclusion without one shovel of dirt being dug.

It's amazing what you can tell from a few shadowy marks on a radar scan.

Why, you people seem sceptical. I can clearly make out an entire underground complex in this picture and can state conclusively how each of the many buildings were used.

Well, given that you are looking at just one vertical slice through the stratigraphy there and a 3D image has to be built up from hundreds side-by-side which are then computer processed to bring out the different levels, hardly surprising that it doesn't make much sense ;-)

A far cry from when I started out in resistivity survey and had to write down each reading then later enter them into a computer by hand. In fact, I wrote my first computer program back in 1982 to avoid having to do that!

The Austrians have been pioneers of 3D GPR for years and some of their results have been truly stunning and led me (nearly five years ago now) into investigating using it for a particular site but it is very pricey. Just a pity the Spiegel article is obsessed with a load of reconstructions that look like they were done by somebody who spent too much of their life playing Caesar III...

There is a bit that goes into interpretation of geophysical scanning, otherwise anyone could do it. People are doing PhDs in this discipline, it's not hocus pocus but it's also not as simple as looking at a photograph.
