I agree. There are always exceptions. How do we know a specific unit might not have been equipped slightly differently? How do we know an individual might not have tried it out? Say you lost your own helmet in the thick of fighting and found another that fits?
Hannibal's Cathaginian forces equipped themselves with captured Roman gear after various battles. In more recent times Prussian troops fighting Napoleon were outfitted by the British, and fresh and inexperienced American forces arriving for WW1 were sometimes equipped with British gear.
You just never know about these things and can never be absolutely certain.
