How can we improve RAT in 2012
#91
When you go to 'Round Table', the first thing you see is a forum for 'Awards'. The last post was over two and a half years ago and, as far as I know, decorations are no longer awarded. Is there any point in retaining this?

When inserting images or links, after pasting a URL in the box at the top you have to use a mouse to click a button rather than just hit Return, which is the logical response for most UIs (cf logging into windoze). Instead, this posts it instantly, rather than inserting whatever you want and is a right royal pain as you have to go back and edit the post. Mucking around with mice wastes time (as Tom once said to Jerry).

Personally I would like to see some of the decorations readopted, but in the case of some, like the Hasta Pura, having stricter criteria and others, like the phalerae, to only last for a specified time period rather than lasting indefinitely.

I know I'm new here but this drives me crazy:

Some of the post are useless because the pictures no longer appear. It's frustrating using the "Search" function because you think you've found what you're looking for only for there to be no images! Perhaps a moderator could be given authority to go through and clean up all the boards to make it more efficient.

Jay, I think some of the old photos were lost when the forum changed servers a while back. I don't think many of them could be recovered, and some folks have closed photosharing accounts, so those would be unaccessible regardless. But, yep, I agree. It's a shame that some of the old photos are no longer viewable.

The forum has in fact switched servers and forum software several times over the 11 years of its existence. Migrations and (necessary) upgrades are a recipe for losing attachments. I actually have all the files that were hosted here, but reconnecting them to posts is a horrible and nearly impossible job. The new forum system seems very stable and has a very easy upgrade path, so hopefully we can stick with this for the foreseeable future.

Jay and Crispvs, I'd love to see the award system reinstated, but that was a true 'hack' in the old forum. I've been trying to find an equivalent for this system, but haven't found any dependable modification. The other objection is that we'd have to have reliable medal moderators who'd be willing to sift through the candidates every so many weeks.

Mike: I'll see if there's a fix to that.

On a frivolous note, we can currently see the Top Five who received thank-yous, but it would be nice to see the Top Five who gave thank-yous. (I did say it was a frivolous request.)

I think we should have animated GIFs/PNGs as avatars so we can all match the rate that a certain D B Campbell changes his ;-)

I know it wasn´t used a lot, but the Events Calendar on roman army.com was actually quite a sensible thing. Is there a tool to implement an Events Calendar on this board, which would link the events right to the topics in the events section?

I think the whole site is great! Though I do have a niggle or two. However I think the presentation in the sub-forums could be tidier. For example, a small bracketed "(1 New)" next to a thread is easily missed. Would it be possible to revert to a design more akin to the home page and traditional forum, with a different colour for new topics, and views and replies next to each other.

Again this is my personal opinion and apart from the aforementioned "niggles". Great job with the forum so far.
