Etruscan naval strenght.
#1
Hello all,

Can anybody help me with the Etruscan fleets at Alalia (535 BC)and Cumae (474 BC)??

Numbers seem pretty clear but i can't find any information on the types of ships they used.

Perhaps triremes?? Pentekonters?

Besides that is there any information on Etruscan naval/ maritim capabilities

Any help would be welcome Wink

If by the battle of Alalia, you mean the one off Corsica between the Phocaean refugees and a combined Etruscan and Carthaginian fleet, Herodotus 1.166 just says νῆες "ships" and πλοῖα "(merchant) ships" which had rams to break. The date and place of invention of the trireme is quite controversial, but Lionel Casson argued for the 7th century BCE in Ships and Seamanship in the Ancient World.

I have not checked this forum frequently since 2013, but I hope that these old posts have some value. I now have a blog on books, swords, and the curious things humans do with them.

Maybe these depictions from two vase give can help you a bit.

The first one is from around the mid seventh century from Cerveteri:

Yes, that's the one but the Phocaean Greeks only evacuated Corsica after the battle
so this wasn't a refugee fleet...yet...

Thanks for the pics Avile Smile
