Roman Recruiting?
#1
I am a member of both Cohors 1 Batavorum and the Colchester Roman Society but have the misfortune of living some distance away from the centre of both groups. I am located in Ratae the capital of sunny Leicestershire. I am looking for like minded individuals located nearer to home (Roman and Iron age). Has anyone any good advice for recruiting?

Make yourself visible. Use the press is one option. Another would be to make sure you have an local event every now and then.

Wow, what a question. :-)

Most Roman enthusiasts are often kit collectors with little interest in getting their kit dirty or using it. So you need a different approach to attract people who like camping, testing equipment and the idea of actually doing events.

And you do actually need to attract the clients who are willing to ask you to events and pay for you to be there. You need to be proffessional, educational and entertaining. Which takes time and money to organise. You need proffessional people around you and an excellent website. Aim for the utmost level of authenticity, and the most enjoyable shows possible.

Good luck with your endeavours. This season is my 25th season organising events and most weekends this spring summer and autumn I'll be campaigning somewhere. It is a great way of enjoying yourself, and my family love it. If I can be of any anu help PM me.

Were you in Exeter last week?
It's a great group, and doing events at actual Roman sites is all
part of the educational experience.
I'm up in York, but joined the rebels earlier this year, but have known them for some time with the XIIIIth.

Thanks for all the advice, its all taken on board. Just to make it clear i'm happy with both the groups i'm in, i'm just looking to expand in my local area. The idea of a numeri unit appeals as it can take on board both Roman and iron age aspects. The idea of getting out and using the kit appeals to the former soldier in me. No i wasn't at Exeter, but will be at the Lunt this saturday.

I'll miss that unfortunately.
Yes authentically using kit is interesting,
plus camping in real tent is great too.

If you are still interested in the Passion Play, a couple of the other men portraying soldiers have keenly signed up to portray them for a couple of years now. One of them is ex-RAF regiment and it is not beyond the realms of possibility that one or both of them might be interested in dressing up as Romans a little more often. Worth a crack I would say.

Incidentally, if you are planning on stopping off at the Oak in Bagington after the Lunt training session on Saturday, I plan on stopping by for an hour or two after rehearsal.
